2011 Fall Training Schedule
Fall is here which means N.E.S.T. is getting ready for
the 2011 Cold Stun Stranding Season. These fall training classes are specifically for volunteers
(ages 14+) who live on the Outer Banks
and are interested in participating in sea turtle monitoring efforts.

Cold Stun Stranding and Live Turtle Transport Training (1 hr)
Who should attend?
Any volunteer interested in helping out with live and dead stranding response and/or assisting with transport of live cold stun turtles.
When?
Oct.
22nd at 10 AM
at the NC Aquarium on Roanoke Island
Directions to the NC Aquarium on Roanoke Island (374 Airport Road)
● Take 64/264 north through the town of Manteo
● Turn left onto Airport Rd.
● Follow the road all the way near the end to the NC Aquarium
● Park in the main lot and ask admissions for directions to the location of the training.
Also, it’s the time of year to get ready for marine mammal strandings and hauled out seals. The Outer Banks Marine Mammal Stranding Network
(OBX MMSN) is a partnership with the Outer Banks Center for Wildlife Education, NC Aquarium on Roanoke Island, and the National Park Service.

All volunteers should attend one of the Orientation sessions and then pick from the remaining team sessions based on your interests.
Marine Mammal Stranding Network Orientation (1 hr)

Live Cetacean Response (1 ½ hrs)
Who should attend?
Those interested in volunteering with the OBX Marine Mammal Stranding Network to respond to live dolphin, porpoise, and whale strandings.

Seal Monitoring (1 ½ hrs)
Who should attend?
Those interested in assisting with health assessments and monitoring of hauled out seals.

Directions to the Wildlife Education Center in Corolla (1160 Village Lane)
● Take NC 12 north through Duck and Corolla
● Turn LEFT into Currituck Heritage park (approximately 3.5 miles after the Food Lion stop light in Corolla)
● Turn RIGHT at the guard house
● Follow Village Lane through the park to the last parking lot at the end
● The Wildlife Center is the building with the green roof. The receptionist will direct you to the class
Directions to the Library in Kill Devil Hills
● Turn WEST onto Collington Road
● Take first LEFT onto Mustian St
● The library will be on your right (#400) between Meadowlark. and St. Clair Streets
● The room where the trainings will take place is located on the back side of the library. Follow the sidewalk around to the back and knock on the door if it is not open.
