CHES 4th grader, Jeidy Garcia-Velazquez, wins a N.E.S.T. t-shirt!

This school year Cape Hatteras Elementary School (CHES) became our third Dare County elementary school to adopt the sea turtle curriculum, joining Kitty Hawk and Nags Head Elementary Schools as N.E.S.T. schools. The main hall cabinet display proudly announces they are a N.E.S.T. school. CHES has instituted “Turtle Tuesdays” with games, puzzles, book challenges and even making origami turtles to educate their students about our beautiful sea turtles.

Cape Hatteras received the life size loggerhead sea turtle model and in line with KHES and NHES ran a school wide competition to name their turtle. “Salty” now joins “Seaweed” at KHES and “Surfer” at NHES. The naming winner at CHES was 4th grader Jeidy Garcia-Velazquez. These stunning models, created by Mandie Van Middlesworth from the aquarium, reside in the libraries so all grades and students can enjoy and learn from these fabulous teaching tools.
