July 6th 2011 Call #3 Nest #13:
Heidi calls from the Corolla south run. She's found something that looks sort of like a crawl, but not really. Mary Kaye heads to check it out. Fortunately, it was on an undeveloped part of the beach so there was not much disturbance but even still, the crawl was really faint. There
was a disturbed area though, much like a nest site. The only turtle this could be would be a Kemp's Ridley. Kemp's don't normally nest in NC but last year there were two nests, could we be seeing more? Time will tell. No eggs were found but the site was flagged off and we'll keep monitoring it.
August 23rd 2011: NEST #11 developed a sink hole on Tuesday 8/23 before 7:30 p.m. Nearby visitors indicated they thought it had appeared about 6:00 p.m. ( it had not been there at 4 p.m.) No changes between 9 p.m. and midnight, when the last volunteers left. No signs of emergence at 7:30 a.m. Wed morning, so we will be back on watch Wed. evening!
