Nest#2 found in Kill Devil Hills

June 7th 2011 Nest#2: Around 11 PM a group of beach goers were lucky enough to witness a nesting loggerhead turtle. Peyton, Brooke, Carson, Reid, Gage, and Jonathon sat there counting each egg as she dropped them into the egg chamber. Wanting to make sure that all 117 eggs were protected, they went back to their cottage and contacted N.E.S.T.. Nesting responders received the call around 1AM and were on the beach shortly afterwards. Working on a dark beach and with a nesting site where the crawl pattern had been disturbed by earlier onlookers, responders found finding the eggs a bit of challenge until Paula hollered out, “I’ve got them!” The site was then staked off and we all returned to bed.

August 3rd 2011: Our first nest has hatched! Nest #2 in Kill Devil Hills hatched last night on day 56 with approximately 85-95 hatchlings emerging. The sink hole formed around 8:15 pm and emergence was around 8:40 pm.

After its initial hatching on the night of Tuesday, August 2, N.E.S.T. Volunteers witnessed one hatchling emerge and make its way to the ocean on Wednesday evening.

On Friday afternoon, three hatchlings were found either in the surf or on the beach by visitors along the KDH /Nags Head shores. They were brought to the Nest #2 excavation and released from there. There were no other live hatchlings to release when the nest was excavated so these 3 provided a nice experience.

Nest#2 Final Total:
125 hatched
1 pipped
5 undeveloped
