June 19th 2011:
Nest #5 was discovered shortly after ATV rider Jim hit the beach. Just south of the Kitty Hawk pier, he not only found a crawl leading to a nest but he also found mom still finishing up.
Nesting responders Jonny, Barbara, and Marilyn arrived just in time to see her back into the water.
August 12th 2011: This nest has had many volunteers anxiously watching it now for several days. It ended up hatching last night (Friday, August 12) on day 55 with approximately 77 making their way to the ocean, then 2 late comers with one exiting during the early morning hours to leave a spectacular single track down the center as it raced to the water with ghost crab marks in hot pursuit - the high tide carried our baby safely into its froth! Total emergence count as of 6:30 am this morning is 80.
Nest#5 Final Total:
96 Whole eggshells
15 Pipped
2 Dead Hatchlings
6 Live Hatchlings
