June 29th 2011: We had Nest #7 (130 eggs) yesterday morning and Nest #8 (106 eggs) this morning. Both Loggerhead nests were originally in S. Nags Head. Due to the restrictions with the beach
renourishment project, both nests were relocated to Kill Devil Hills. In addition, 1 egg was taken from each nest for the DNA research project.
We have now reached the number of nests that we had on the Outer Banks last year. Here's looking forward to what the month of July brings us!
June 30th 2011: Nest #9 was laid in S. Nags Head for the 3rd morning in a row. The Logggerhead nest had 123 eggs and was re-located to Kill Devil Hills.
August 18th 2011: After 3 sink holes on Nests #7, 8, and 9 on the same night on Tuesday, a bunch decided to come out of Nest #8 and 9 on Wednesday and Thursday. They have had a total of 91 turtles from nest #8 and 60 Turtles from nest #9. There was no activity (still a sinkhole) in nest #7 up until last night (Friday) when the rest decided to join in on the fun! Nest #7 came alive with two boils and a total of 74 hatchlings - they made it quickly to the ocean and were gone. Nest #9 had an additional 4 hatch. No activity on Nest #8.
