The big day has finally arrived, Vortex gets to go home!!

Last Sunday on August 31, the Network for Endangered Sea Turtles (N.E.S.T.) and the North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island (NCARI) were fortunate to be able to return two sea turtles back to the sea, a Loggerhead named Vortex and a Green named Heat Wave (see video clip here).  Vortex came into the STAR Center with severe boat propeller wounds to the skull and has been with us getting loving care from a group of very special people every day for the past 15 months.

Follow Vortex on his journeys!

Vortex has a satellite transmitter attached so everyone can follow his movements back in the water —follow Vortex here!. Heat Wave has been on exhibition at the Aquarium and was being returned home.  N.E.S.T. volunteer Walt Speidell got some great photos of the release…click here to view the full gallery. We hope these two turtles stay safe and just continue to grow and grow!!

N.E.S.T. Volunteers Elaine and Kenny Lubosch help carry Heat Wave safely back to the water.
