It was mid morning and Stephanie visiting from Virginia Beach discovered sea turtle tracks heading into the dune. The NEST hot line was notified of the possible nest, and sent a responding team to investigate. Below is the faint set of tracks that heads up to the sand fence. This turtle laid her eggs, then spun around and headed straight back to the ocean. She placed her nest in a very secure location at the foot of the dune.
The responding team was able to locate the eggs and secure the nest site.
Below is a picture of the nest site after gathering all of our data, adding a data logger into the nest to help calculate when the hatchlings will emerge, and using various measurements to help find the nest should a storm knock out some of our posts.
A special shout out to our friend Stephanie for finding this newly laid nest, and to our wonderful response team who came out in the heat of the day to secure the site.
