Great news! ATV rider John J not only found his first nest of the season but the first nest in Kill Devil Hills. Congratulations John! The curse on Kill Devil Hills has been broken!! After investigating the water temperatures early this morning, I thought our territory was just a bit cold to make the mother sea turtles happy. Duck Pier reported a temp of 64 F. Yikes! But this mother turtle was ready to go.
I guess some of these mother turtles don’t let cooler water stand in their way if they have eggs to lay!
Then seasoned nesting responders, Mary Ann and Rick J, took over. After a few holes they found the egg chamber, took measurements and collected the DNA sample.
Once it was time to rope off the nest and put up signage, the dynamic duo took some extra time to decorate the nest with extra long and colorful surveyors tape!
Thanks Team 26, John J and Mary Ann and Rick J. Great job!
